Unix was developed by Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie in 1969 at AT&T Bell Labs. The Unix operating system is a set of programs that act as a link between the computer and user.
A UNIX shell script is a human-readable text file containing a group of commands. The kernel or the Operating System are the computer programs that allocate the system resources and coordinate the activities of the computer.Users communicate with the kernel through a program called shell. The shell is a command line interpreter which translates commands into a language that is understood by the kernel.Even though there can be only one kernel, a system can have many shell running simultaneously.Whenever a user enters a command through keyboard the shell communicates with the kernel to execute it and then display the output to the user.
The first Unix shell was written by Ken Thompson as the Thompson shell, sh, at Bell Labs and distributed with Versions 1 through 6 of Unix, from 1971 to 1975.Steve Bourne wrote the Bourne shell which appeared in the Seventh Edition Bell Labs Research version of Unix. Other shells include the Korn Shell (ksh), the C Shell (csh), and variations such as tcsh.
The main advantage of unix shell scripting is that it requires only a minimal programming knowledge and is time efficient.Several people can use a Unix computer at the same time hence Unix is called a multiuser system. A user can also run multiple programs at the same time hence Unix is a multitasking environment.
