There are three distinct roles in Hadoop, namely administrator, developer and data scientist. I presume anyone can go into any of these roles but a developer would prefer to leverage his coding skills (Hadoop is written in Java) and the data scientist would have appreciation of statistical tools. Anyone !. Only requirement is understanding of some programming language.
A formal education up to graduation however would be beneficial and if you know Java, then your path will become easier.
